Book Review: The Good Man Jesus And The Scoundrel Christ by Philip Pullman

9:16 PM Posted by Fonzie No comments

Pullman presents a retelling of the central narrative of the bible that questions the foundations of the beliefs of all the devout Christians. So if you're a devout believer and easily offended, you might want to steer clear of this. If you do have an open mind and a capacity to entertain alternate thoughts, you might like this.

Pullman uses the simple device of there being twins born that night in Bethlehem. One called Jesus. And one called Christ. He proceeds to tell the events leading up to Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection.

Pullman's Jesus is a passionate man who does good and preaches kindness and believes in basic humanity. He firmly believes that the Kingdom of God will soon be on earth. He's more like the version presented in the gospels.

Pullman's Christ on the other hand is the one who follows Jesus around and records (and embellishes) all that Jesus does, his words, teachings and his supposed miracles.

The conflict between the two is about the idea of an organization here on earth that would do God's work till the Kingdom comes. As a guide. As a spiritual advisor to the masses.

The writing is brilliant as expected from Pullman. He does a great job of presenting this version. Pullman is not questioning faith but his target is organized religion that acts as the purveyor or spirituality and morality.

Rating: 4/5
3.5/5 for the overall book. Another half star for THAT Jesus soliloquy in the garden.

Hope Kills

11:22 PM Posted by Fonzie No comments
It's the hope that kills.

Hope, that in the morning
As you wake up all dreamy
A ray of sunlight will glint
in your eyes and it will click.
Like Magic.

Sunshine will travel through
your thoughts like a tide
and touch that dark room
in which I reside.
All ball and chains.

The warmth will melt all
my chains and set me free.
I will rise and course through
your veins, you'll see.
A new me.

Alas, I know it's just a dream.
For that room doesn't exist.
The dream is mine, not yours
The ball and chains are mine,
not yours.

But, it's the hope that kills.

The Fall

10:05 PM Posted by Fonzie No comments
The problem with the fall?
It ends. Splat!
Broken. Pieces everywhere.
Down! Squat!
Pick them all.
One by one.

They're all in my hand.
Together! Again!
Do you have a band?
I need to splice these
Pieces of my heart
One by one.

Everybody is looking.
Hide! Smile!
Gonna be okay in a while.
She won't notice
Years will go by
One by one.

What kind of love is this?
Unspoken! Unrequited!
Smells of rotten flesh.
The wounds fester.
The pieces fall.
One by one.

In Trouble

9:05 PM Posted by Fonzie 1 comment
Here in Dublin with all its sights to see
The streets, the bars, the music
And all I wanted was to be with you
I knew I was in trouble

When the cold wind made you shudder
And all I wanted to hold you close to me
To give you all my warmth
I knew I was in trouble

When the girls of Dublin passed us by
And I couldn't help but think that the
Most beautiful one is right by my side
I knew I was in trouble

When you left for the airport that day
I wanted to tell you how I feel
Instead, here I am, alone in my room
And I know, I am in trouble

Smitten

11:28 PM Posted by Fonzie No comments
When I close my eyes and try to think
Dublin passes me by in a blink

But these few things I'll never forget
Memories etched in my mind's net

How your face lit up
when you heard the bagpipes.

How your eyes tried to take in
the bright Galway sky.

How your body moved and swayed,
to the sweet notes of the guitar,
that the buskers played.

How you hummed with laughter,
at the smallest of things,
so effortlessly.

How the wind made your hair fly,
You didn't need to straighten them up
You looked beautiful that way.

How you walked without a care,
as if the world had a beautiful score,
that only you could hear.

These are the things I'll remember
even if everything else fades away.

And another thing, before I forget,
I think I am smitten with you,
if that wasn't clear enough yet.

Happy Birthday - Memories

11:42 AM Posted by Fonzie No comments
Oh the memories attached to this day
Do you remember them all?
Or have new ones replaced them
And has time taken its toll?

Don't let them fade away
Try to remember once in a while
Have a Happy Birthday year after year
Remember us, our time, with a smile.

Book Review: The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

The Old Man and the SeaThe Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

But a man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed
but not defeated.

This quote sums up the book perfectly.

For a few hours, I was there on the skiff sitting right beside the old man, egging him on as the great fish kept moving.

I was sad but at the same time I couldn't help but admire the old man for the perseverance, the skill and the courage he showed. He refused to be defeated. But...

And what beat you, he thought. 'Nothing,' he said aloud.
'I went out too far.'

This truly is one of the simplest and the deepest books ever written.

Light

2:03 AM Posted by Fonzie No comments

Its dark within me.
Moonbeams dance in my room.
But I cannot see.

With Time

2:00 AM Posted by Fonzie No comments

The feeling will pass they say
Time heals, its the only way.
But what if I don't want to heal?
Layers upon layers to peel.
To think what was done and said
Lying at night alone in my bed.

Life passes me by every day
But I don't care and I won't say
Anything to anyone who might ask
I'll hide behind this perfect mask.
A tender smile will be my shield
While slowly still to sorrow, I yield.

The Invite:

Finally! The moment has come for which you all have been waiting!

No! No! Don’t go off to your Boss’s cabin to give him a piece of your mind! It’s not Armageddon yet! That, my dear friends, will come later :P

This moment is a moment to celebrate, a moment to enjoy. And here I am inviting you to celebrate it with me :)

Remember that If you do choose to come and celebrate, there are some guidelines that each of you has to follow:

1) You cannot eat even a morsel of food a full 24 hours before the party. You are expected to come to the party STARVED and devour anything eatable that comes within five meters of you!

2) You will have to dance till you cannot feel you legs beneath you!

3) You will have to be intoxicated with the party spirit and look as if you are high on something!

4) And for my friends who prefer a different kind of intoxication ;-), you will have to drink till you start believing that you are Johnny Depp! (boy! wouldn't that be a lot?).

I hope that’s clear enough!

COME LET’S CELEBRATE! AND CELEBRATE IN STYLE!

Replaced

12:47 AM Posted by Fonzie 3 comments
Things change oh so quick
before you even realize
I know they are not the same
when I look deep into her eyes

It was special I thought
it was sturdy and it was strong
So the realisation is a shock
that something surely went wrong

I sense it all the time now
she seems to just play the part
Though she might still smile
I know its not from the heart

I don't know why she felt that
she cannot talk to me anymore
and the way she distanced herself
it felt like she just shut the door

And I feel unwanted, unwelcome
a feeling I so try to avoid
but she shares with someone else now
and that has left a real big void

So the picture has turned
and in it, I feel misplaced
Never knew it could hurt like this
Oh this feeling of being replaced......

A Journey to remember! Part-II

11:06 PM Posted by Fonzie 3 comments
As the train trudged along its path, we placed our luggage at a place where it did not block the passage we were standing in. We met a girl, I forget her name, who was travelling on e-ticket that had gotten cancelled. When the TTE came to check the tickets, she got herself a General ticket with apparently the last bit of cash that was left with her. More on her later. After around one and a half hours, the first TTE came and went. After another two hours, while we were having our dinner, the next TTE came and it spelt trouble for us. While the previous one understood our situation with the holiday rush and all, this one I guess had a fight with his wife before he left his house in the morning and still hadn't got over it. He saw that we had wait listed ticket and he went berserk, asking us to go to the Sleeper class immediately after finishing our dinner. 'Yeah, like there is plenty of space there. We will be welcomed with open arms by the passengers there!' He left after some time and we heaved a sigh of relief having no intention of following what he said.

We continued to try and Jugaad our way out of the problem of getting some decent space to sleep. We almost were successful in our plans but the final nail was missing. So in the end what I dreaded came true and we had to take our luggage to the end of the bogey.......right where the toilets are......... and had to spend the night in the narrow passage where the doors are......I think you get the picture. We were not alone. The girl I mentioned in the beginning was with us too and she was real friendly. I mean throughout the night she wanted to sleep as close to me as possible. The more I try not to touch her, the more she comes closer. So by the end of the hour, I was in a corner, cramped for room, unable to sleep and there she was, sleeping as if there is nothing weird about sleeping next to a toilet with all the stench filling your senses. And to top it all, she was snuggling with my legs! So began and remained so, the most uncomfortable night of my relatively short life. With the cold steel floor as my bed and iron walls for support, I spent the night half asleep, totally cramped, with pain in every possible part of my body and a weirdo for (close) company.

I have never looked forward to sunrise as I did that night. For I knew, only after sunrise would this ordeal end. And finally, after what seemed like the longest night that can be, the sun rose and so did my heart. People rose from their slumber and started to come down from the upper seats and we started a lookout for empty upper berths so that we can sleep there. We found some and just went to sleep as if we had nothing to give or take from this world. It was probably the best sleep that I have ever had. After I woke up, I felt refreshed though last night's ordeal did leave its impact in the form of pain all over. We made our way down and occupied a berth which was empty because some family had booked it till Jammu but had to travel till Bhopal only. God bless them!

The rest of journey was your run of the mill train journey. We sipped hot tea, ate and watched movies on my laptop. Actually, a whole lot of people watched movies with us. We talked, we laughed and did all that you do on a train. In between, Atul bid us goodbye at Gwalior. We carried on. At last, after thirty hours on the train, half of which were torturous and unforgettable we alighted from the train and breathed a sigh of relief. 'Sigh!'

Sonal's dad and bro came to pick her up and so did my bro. I got home in a state of utter tiredness and was as hungry as I could be. Sipping home made tea, sitting on a comfortable couch felt like heaven and I thanked God for that. So ended that fateful journey about which so much has already been written and said. And nothing more will be.........

Adios!

A Journey to remember! Part-I

3:02 PM Posted by Fonzie 1 comment
Looking back, I think it was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my short life. I was glad when it was over, praying "Please God, let this be one of those 'Once in a lifetime' experiences". I hope someone up there heard me for it was straight from the heart!

Ok.......Let me start from the start........I had booked the tickets almost two months before the journey was to actually take place. The tickets were not confirmed when I booked them and as luck would have it, they were still unconfirmed when the train actually started on its journey to the place I belong.........

On the day of the journey, we started for the station (late as usual) from the office. The 'we' here includes Sonal, Khush and yours truly. We got into the only rick that we could find, who apparently would have had difficulty in getting fare back from the station for he asked for twenty rupees over and above the meter fare or maybe he was just taking advantage of our situation.......may God bless him with a severe case of piles!

The train was to leave at 5:20 and we got out of the rick at five O'clock sharp. I paid the rick driver and we started on foot towards the main entrance. Khush bid us goodbye at the entrance for she had to catch a bus to Mumbai. Now it was Sonal and I facing the humongous mass of humanity crowding every available inch of the entrance. Just then somewhere from the barely audible loud speakers we heard the announcement " Jhelum Express will leave on time from platform no. 1 ". I thought 'Great! What a time for the Indian Railways to show their punctuality'. Sonal phoned her friend who was already waiting at the platform for us. She suddenly turned towards me and said " We need to go to the platform by getting round the stairs". She might as well have said something in German for I was clueless. 'What stairs? Why can't we go by the entrance like everyone else?' By the time I could ask her these questions she was on the phone again probably getting the directions. After she was off the phone I followed her as she marched forward as if she knew the place like the back of her hand. After walking 100 meters or so we saw the stairs that we were supposed to go around. But seeing that all we had was a three feet wide passage that was filled with humanity, I had serious doubts about the odds of us reaching the other end in one piece, so to speak. But undaunted she marched on and all I could do was try and keep pace. We took the crowd head on and tried to bully our way through. I don't know how many souls were hit unwittingly by the bags that I was carrying but I was too busy not to fall down to actually stop and apologise. After a grueling two minutes which seemed like eternity we were finally able to go around and climb the stairs to reach the platform safely. 'Yay!'

On the platform Sonal's friend was waiting for us. Another one of Sonal's friend, Atul, was to board the train with us. He joined us shortly and I think it was 5:20 when we regained our composure and frantically ran towards the train still believing it was on time. We climbed into the first third AC coach we could find. 'Gosh! that was close. We almost missed the train. I am so glad we made it!'. I was so busy rejoicing that I failed to notice that It was almost 5:30 and still the train did not look like it was moving any where in a jiffy.

In a short while, we found out that the reason the train wasn't moving anywhere was that the reservation chart had not yet been prepared. I found this ridiculous as the chart is suppossed to be put up at least two hours before the departure of the train. We also needed to look at the chart because our tickets were still wait-listed. Frantic calls were being made by Atul and I so that we could find out the status of our tickets. But no updates were forthcoming. I called up my Dad asking him if the tickets were confirmed as he said they would be (you know he is a govt. officer? :D). But Alas, nothing could be done until the chart is prepared. So we waited. At last after almost two hours of waiting in the humid and cramped conditions, we heard the bad news. "The chart has been prepared and our tickets were still not confirmed". At this point I seriously considered getting off the train and try to book a flight instead. But we had no option left but to endure this journey of 28 hours (officially) without any place to sit or sleep. I dreaded to think where we would sleep. I knew the answer but I did not want to think about it. The train at last started from the platform and I braced myself for a journey that was sure to be unforgettable.

To be continued......
